There have been many questions about the stability of our Social Security system. This is a very big topic with lots of speculation, access getting limited and threats to benefits. I don’t have answers, but our team does have some tips on proactive things you can do to help yourself as much as possible as we navigate this difficult situation.
- Create a Social Security login at www.ssa.gov if you haven’t already
- PRINT your social security statement
- Set up a bank account ONLY to be used for SS direct deposits
- If you have a large balance in that account, move whatever is above the minimum to keep the account open (be mindful of fees) and transfer large amounts to another account, at a DIFFERENT bank
- Don’t link any kind of bill pay or direct deposits to this account
- Don’t have or use a debit card on this account
