A Day in the Life of a Financial Advisor at Planning for Good

At Planning for Good, work doesn’t feel like a separate entity—it’s woven into the fabric of life. As a fully virtual practice, our team works remotely, whether from home offices or small, personal workspaces. We enjoy flexibility in our schedules, though in reality, that often means working all the time—because when you’re passionate about serving clients, the line between work and life blurs.

For me, that looks like a 50-hour workweek, punctuated by deep client conversations, strategic financial planning, and investment management. We have the luxury of choosing our own dress code—bare feet included! The remote nature of our practice means we meet virtually most of the time, though occasional on-site coaching sessions and local team events bring us together in person.

The Skills That Matter

This profession isn’t just about numbers—it’s about people. While I hold a finance degree, success in this field isn’t limited to any one educational background. What really matters is:
✅ A deep interest in financial planning, investments, and insurance
✅ High organizational skills to manage details efficiently
✅ The ability to be focused and flexible in a constantly evolving environment
✅ An understanding that financial advising is ultimately a sales profession—we have to articulate our value to prospective clients
✅ Business management skills—because, at its core, this is running a business

The Reality—Pros & Cons

🌟 The Perks

  • Work where and when you want
  • Choose who your clients are
  • Often select your own colleagues
  • Earn significant income potential—your earnings depend on who you serve, where you focus, and how much you commit
  • The freedom to shape your practice around your values

⚡ The Challenges

  • Income variability—building up earnings takes time
  • The early years are grueling—lots of learning, lots of hustle
  • To grow, you need a team—there’s too much to manage alone
  • Disagreements happen—but it’s part of business and leadership

Why I Built Planning for Good

I sacrificed a lot to build my practice, which has now grown into a team-focused firm centered on serving women with wealth and the LGBTQ community. These groups have long been underserved in financial advising, lacking reliable guidance tailored to their unique experiences.

This work is more than a career—it’s a calling.

If you want to do this work and believe you can, I’d love to hear from you—we’re expanding our team.
